What is a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) for Eating Disorders?

A Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is a highly structured and intensive treatment program for individuals struggling with eating disorders. It serves as a transitional step between residential and outpatient treatment.

At EDCare, we understand the complex nature of eating disorders and the significant impact they can have on individuals’ lives. We are dedicated to providing comprehensive and effective treatment options, including our PHP for eating disorders. Our PHP offers a structured and supportive environment for individuals who require intensive care but do not require round-the-clock hospitalization.

Our PHP for eating disorders is designed to meet the unique needs of each individual, addressing the physical, emotional, and psychological aspects of their condition. With a multidisciplinary team of experts, including physicians, therapists, registered dietitians, and specialized staff, we create personalized treatment plans that focus on recovery and long-term wellness.

Why Is A Partial Hospitalization Program Essential for EDs?

Partial hospitalization for eating disorders (EDS) offers a crucial bridge between residential treatment and outpatient care. It offers a highly therapeutic environment focusing on medical, nutritional, and psychological aspects of recovery.

Patients receive individualized treatment plans, including therapy, meal support, and skill-building to address their disorder’s physical and emotional aspects. This level of care helps individuals establish a sense of normalcy while still benefiting from the expert guidance they need to break free from the grips of their ED and move toward a more balanced life.

Many individuals with eating disorders experience physical health complications due to malnutrition, electrolyte imbalances, and other related issues. PHPs provide medical monitoring and intervention to stabilize and restore an individual’s physical health. This may include regular medical assessments, nutritional counseling, and guidance from healthcare professionals.

What Can I Expect in PHP Eating Disorder Treatment?

PHP for eating disorders typically involve a structured treatment schedule that includes various therapeutic activities throughout the day. This may include individual therapy sessions, group therapy, nutritional counseling, psychoeducation, and other evidence-based modalities.

PHPs provide regular medical monitoring to address any physical health concerns related to the eating disorder. This may involve ongoing assessments, monitoring of vital signs, management of medications if necessary, and collaboration with medical professionals.

Nutritional counseling is a crucial component of PHPs. Registered dietitians work closely with individuals to develop a personalized meal plan, educate them about balanced nutrition, and help establish a better relationship with food. They may also provide ongoing support and guidance during meals and snacks.

PHPs often take a holistic approach, addressing the eating disorder symptoms and other areas of individuals well-being. This may include incorporating mindfulness practices, expressive therapies, and stress management techniques to promote overall mental and emotional wellness.

As individuals progress through PHP, the treatment team collaborates on developing an aftercare plan to support their transition to lower levels of care or outpatient treatment. This may involve referrals to ongoing therapy, support groups, or other resources in the community to ensure continued progress and support after PHP.

Patients Learn and Practice Recovery Skills

At EDCare’s Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), patients recovering from eating disorders learn and put into practice the recovery skills for life-long success. This program helps patients internalize those skills so they can incorporate them into their way of life. As patients begin to experience daily successes, eventually they are able to gradually transition from our supportive, structured environment back into daily life at home.

Admission Day – What to Expect:

Patients begin work with their treatment team as soon as they are admitted into EDCare’s Partial Hospitalization Program. Within 48 hours of meeting an admissions clinician, a full treatment team is in place: a primary therapist, psychiatrist, registered dietitian and family therapist. Each team member plays an important role in working toward the patient’s recovery – but none more so than the patient themselves.

On the first day of PHP, the typical process includes:
  • Appointment with our staff physician for full medical exam
  • Completion of initial paperwork
  • Meet with registered dietitian for a nutritional assessment
  • Meet with an admissions counselor for orientation
  • Meet our “Milieu” staff – the therapists who provide daily guidance and become oriented  with the meal process
  • Meet with a primary therapist and complete a psychological assessment (individualized treatment program begins at this time)
  • Meet with attending psychiatrist and complete a psychiatric assessment
  • Meet with patient account supervisor to confirm and discuss financial obligations and arrangements

Family, Patient, and Treatment Team Involvement

The patient’s active participation is vital for a successful PHP program. They must be willing to engage in therapy, follow the treatment plan, and utilize the skills learned during treatment. Patients are also responsible for engaging in and practicing the coping skills, strategies, and tools provided by their treatment team. This helps them develop balanced behaviors around food, body image, and emotions, leading to sustainable recovery.

The Family’s Role in Therapy

The family is a crucial support system for the individual in the PHP program. They provide emotional support, encouragement, and understanding throughout the treatment process. They also play a vital role in educating themselves about eating disorders, the recovery process, and how to best support their loved one.

This knowledge helps them understand the challenges their loved one faces and enables them to communicate effectively and empathetically.

Lastly, families can assist in identifying potential triggers or warning signs of relapse, providing ongoing support, and encouraging adherence to aftercare plans post-PHP. The family’s involvement and support post-treatment can significantly contribute to sustained recovery.

The Treatment Team’s Role in Therapy

The treatment team provides various forms of therapy, including individual therapy, group therapy, and family therapy. They offer evidence-based approaches to address the underlying causes of the eating disorder, develop coping skills, and promote lasting recovery.

The treatment team also collaborates with the patient and their family to develop an aftercare plan, ensuring a smooth transition to lower levels of care or outpatient treatment. They provide guidance on maintaining progress, accessing ongoing therapy, and utilizing community resources.
