SUMMARY:Eating Disorders in Athletes - Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Student-athletes are the heroes of March Madness\, but even heroes need help sometimes. Unfortunately\, athletes are less likely to seek treatment for an eating disorder due to stigma\, accessibility\, and sport-specific barriers. \nThat’s why ANAD\, Morgan’s Message\, and EDCare are teaming up to host a virtual panel discussion about eating disorders in athletes. \nWe’ve invited a winning panel of current and former athletes to share their experiences with an eating disorder. Linda Steinhardt\, MS\, RD from EDCare’s Athlete EDGE Program will also join the panel to discuss what to look for when it comes to eating concerns in athletes and the help that is available. \nScan the QR code in the image below or click the link to register. \n CLICK HERE TO REGISTER

Most people have heard of them\, but can’t separate fact from fiction. \nEating disorders typically begin between 18 and 21 years of age. The National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) estimates that between 10 and 20% of women and 4 to 10% of men in college suffer from an eating disorder\, and rates are on the rise. \nJoin EDCare and Dr. Sheila Swearngin during NEDAwareness Week for an engaging presentation on eating disorder causes\, signs\, symptoms\, effects\, treatment options\, and what you can do to support a friend or loved one that is struggling. Stick around for a Q&A! \nThis virtual event is free and open to all! \n\nSpeaker:\n\nSheila Swearngin\, PhD\, CEDS-S | Lead Psychologist and Training Supervisor\nDr. Sheila Swearngin is a licensed psychologist in both Missouri and Kansas. She has an MA in Clinical Psychology and a PhD in Counseling Psychology from the University of Missouri in Kansas City. She completed her pre-doctoral internship at the University of Kansas\, School of Medicine in Wichita and Wichita State University\, specializing in the treatment of eating disorders. \nBefore coming to EDCare\, Dr. Swearngin worked as a psychologist in private practice for more than 20 years\, specializing in the treatment of eating and related disorders\, compulsive exercise and working with student-athletes\, addressing body image\, trauma\, and chronic health concerns. She enjoys collaborating with a multi-disciplinary team\, and is a Certified Eating Disorders Specialist. Dr. Swearngin conceptualizes patients as being experts of their own story and envisions the process of treatment as collaborative\, encouraging patients to be active and engaged in their recovery and change process\, within a safe and supportive environment. \nIn her free time\, she enjoys travel\, competitive and recreational cycling\, yoga\, skiing\, and spending time with her family and friends. \n  \n\n \n\n
