Description:

This presentation will focus upon temperament traits that may be viewed as risk factors for the development and maintenance of Eating Disorders and facilitate positive outcomes for recovery. Temperament and character has been shown to be important in the onset and in the treatment of eating disorders. Recently new information has emerged suggesting that people who develop eating disorders often have traits, such as perfectionism, reward dependence, avoidance, inhibition, and hyper-vigilance. This workshop will conclude with a discussion about the implications for the de-stigmatization of eating disorders and developing trait-based treatments.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will identify and measure temperament traits in eating disorders.
  2. Participants will identify specific eating disorder traits which can be utilized as strengths in recovery.
  3. Participants will discuss treatments that have been developed to constructively utilize eating disorder traits.
