What Happens During an Assessment
- Typical length: about one hour, by phone or in person.
- Focus: medical history, eating behaviors, prior treatment, and current safety concerns.
- Outcome: recommended level of care and next steps for admission.
- Family input: clinicians may ask for family observations; family members can wait nearby unless the patient prefers otherwise.

On the Day of Admission
- The assessment informs the individualized treatment plan.
- Family members may attend orientation or brief family meetings when appropriate.
- Your Admissions Counselor will review logistics, visitation, and initial supports.
Defining Your Role in Recovery
- Keep routines and provide practical help (meals, appointments, transportation).
- Avoid comments about weight, calories, or body shape.
- Set clear, calm boundaries and follow the treatment team’s guidance.
- Work with clinicians on consistent expectations at home.
Safe Language Families Can Use
- “I’m worried because I’ve noticed changes in your eating and energy.”
- “Can I help you make an appointment?”
- “I want to support you. I’m not blaming you.”
Family Therapy
