Former Team USA Skier Spreading Awareness about Eating Disorders in Sports

Dr. Mark Allen, MD from EDCare and Athlete EDGE® Ambassador, Alice Merryweather, who recently retired from the USA Olympic Alpine Ski team, sat down with Denver7 to discuss eating disorders in sport.

Dr. Allen and Alice are raising awareness about athletes struggling with eating disorders and seeking to normalize the process of athletes seeking care for an eating disorder or other mental health concern in the same way they would seek care for a physical injury.

After opening up about getting treatment at Athlete EDGE® at EDCare, Alice heard from many other athletes going through the same struggles. She said it can be easy for a young athlete’s drive for perfection and success to turn into something harmful, particularly when observing how society tends to talk about athletes.

“I was [at Athlete EDGE at EDCare] for six weeks during my eating disorder, and it’s the place that I got treatment and got back on track.” – Alice Merryweather, 2018 Olympic Alpine Skier, Athlete EDGE Ambassador
