Summary

This presentation will provide foundational information to those seeking to better understand the experience of LGBTQ+ people who are navigating eating disorder recovery. The presenter will provide information regarding the current trends in eating disorder care for LGBTQ+ people, as well as treatment challenges, and factors to consider in this work. Finally, case studies will be utilized to help individuals appreciate the complexities within this work, and the importance of attending to the intersection of diversity variables and eating disorders.

Oakton Community College will offer continuing education credit through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation for Social workers, Professional Counselors, Registered Nurses, Nursing Home Administrators, Psychologists, Marriage and Family Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists. For Dietitians Oakton is a provider of CPE credit for Dietitian through the   Commission on Dietetic Registration. Addictions counselors are ICB, Inc. approved. Please refer to your individual state rules and regulations or contact your licensing board regarding whether your profession and state has reciprocal approval for this program.

Learning Objectives

  • Equip individuals with understanding of terms and foundational information regarding the experiences of LGBTQ+ people.
  • Gain understanding of prevalence rates, demographics, and other relevant background data on the unique experiences for LGBTQ+ people who experience eating disorders.
  • Identify current trends and challenges in eating disorder treatment approaches for LGBTQ+ people.

Speaker

Dr. Julia Sadusky, Psy.D.  has worked with eating disorders, substance use, trauma, and co-occurring concerns throughout her clinical work including substance use residential treatment, outpatient mental health clinics, and university counseling centers. She earned her doctorate from Regent University in Virginia Beach, VA., where she specialized in research and clinical work in sexuality and gender identity. She completed her pre-doctoral training at Biola University Counseling Center in La Mirada, CA, where she provided clinical services treating eating disorders, trauma-related disorders, and personality disorders and offered preventative trainings related to self-esteem, sexuality, and body image concerns.

As a primary therapist at EDCare, Dr. Sadusky seeks to support patients as they gain insight into the underlying factors that have contributed to and maintain their eating disorder. She also aims to foster hope in each patient’s capacity to move toward value-congruent living throughout recovery.

Dr. Sadusky enjoys being outdoors, brewing homemade kombucha, and cheering on her favorite NFL team – Go Eagles!
